Changes to application forms and invitation to participate in the Veterinary Medicines Information Database survey

The new Veterinary Medicinal Products Regulation came into force on 28 January 2022. Among many other consequences, this Regulation affects a variety of application forms. For this reason, a number of application forms have been changed in recent months.

Application forms

The following application forms have been changed recently.

  • Import certificate under the cascade system
Due to the Veterinary Medicinal Products Regulation, minor changes had to be made to the rules regarding the cascade system. More information on this matter can be found here.

In exceptional cases, a veterinarian is permitted to treat an animal using a veterinary medicine that has been approved in a third country for the same species with the same indications. However, an import certificate is required for such products. This will inform the authorities in both the exporting country and the importing country (the Netherlands) of the legal basis of the activity.

An import certificate can be requested via the following form:
Request form for an import certificate under the cascade system.

  • Register of online trade in veterinary medicines
Since 28 January 2022, specific requirements have been applicable to all retailers who have or wish to set up a website for the online sale of veterinary medicines alongside the sale of veterinary medicines from a physical shop. More information on this matter can be found here.

You can register as an online trader of veterinary medicines via the following form: Register of web shops for distance retail in veterinary medicines

NB: This form will soon be made available to veterinarians and pharmacists.

  • Register of raw materials for veterinary medicines
As of 28 January 2022, importers, manufacturers and/or distributors have been obliged to report all active ingredients to the Veterinary Medicinal Products Unit (instead of to Farmatec) in the event that they can be used as a raw material for veterinary medicines. More information on this matter can be found here.

Registration of raw materials for veterinary medicines can be made via the following form: Registration form for the register of raw materials for veterinary medicines

  • Various types of certificates
Information about the certificates that you can obtain from the Veterinary Medicinal Products Unit can be found here. In addition to the most common certificates, you can now also request a number of less common certificates from us. This can be done via the following form:

  • Authorisation for the retail, wholesale and manufacturing of veterinary medicines
More information about this authorisation can be found here.

  • Application for specific pets
The text concerning applications for specific pets has recently been changed and can be consulted here. We expect you will be able to submit applications for veterinary medicines intended for use on a specific species classified as a pet by the beginning of 2023.

Veterinary Medicines Information Bank survey

All approved SPCs, labels and information leaflets for veterinary medicines approved in the Netherlands can be found via the Veterinary Medicines Information Bank of the Veterinary Medicinal Products Unit.

The Veterinary Medicinal Products Unit is currently conducting a study in the form of a survey in order to gain insight into use of the Veterinary Medicines Information Bank.

We would be extremely grateful if you would complete the survey. It will take you a maximum of five minutes to complete the survey.
