The Novel Foods Unit of the Medicines Evaluation Board (MEB) advises the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) on novel foods. An application for market authorisation of a novel food in the European Union must be submitted electronically to the European Commission. There are two different application procedures for this. Until 1 January 2018, a safety assessment dossier was submitted to the competent authority of one of the European member states. In this context, a number of assessment reports have been issued in the Netherlands.
