Botanicals and Novel Foods

The Botanicals and Novel Foods unit is responsible for the assessment of homeopathic, anthroposophic and herbal medicines. The unit is also responsible for the assessment of novel foods.

With respect to homeopathic, anthroposophic and herbal medicines, it assesses the quality and safety and offers scientific advice. It prepares the proposals to the MEB for authorisation or acceptance of variations. It also handles the regulatory aspects (monitoring of European and national procedures), process coordination, management support and the inspection of product information. The unit represents the MEB in various European consultation frameworks: the Homeopathic Medicinal Products Working Group (HMPWG) and the Herbal Medicinal Product Committee (HMPC).

The unit is also responsible for assessing novel foods. Novel foods are assessed as to their safety for the entire European market. The Novel Foods Unit writes an advisory report on the product and presents this to the Minister for Health, Welfare and Sport.
