Botanicals and Novel Foods
The Botanicals and Novel Foods unit is responsible for the assessment of homeopathic, anthroposophic and herbal medicines. The unit is also responsible for the handling of submitted application on the determination of status of novel foods, and advises the ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) about the European authorisation of novel foods. For more information, see the pages on novel foods.
With respect to homeopathic, anthroposophic and herbal medicines, it assesses the quality and safety and offers scientific advice. It prepares the proposals to the MEB for authorisation or acceptance of variations. It also handles the regulatory aspects (monitoring of European and national procedures), process coordination, management support and the inspection of product information. The unit represents the MEB in various European consultation frameworks: the Homeopathic Medicinal Products Working Group (HMPWG) and the Herbal Medicinal Product Committee (HMPC).
